Lowest-Calorie Meals at UK Restaurant Chains (October 2026)
Eating out while watching calories? We went through the official menus of 16 UK restaurant chains that publish calories, and picked out the lightest proper dish at each one. To avoid recommending a side salad as a meal, we only counted dishes priced at or above that chain’s typical food price.
Lightest proper dish at each chain
How many dishes are 500 kcal or less?
500 kcal is a quarter of the NHS guide of 2,000 kcal a day for women, and a fifth of 2,500 kcal for men. Here is how many food items on each menu come in at or under that:
Tips for a lighter meal out
- Check the calories on the menu before you order. Chains in England with 250 or more staff must show calories on their menus.
- Watch the sides and drinks. On many menus a side of chips or a sugary drink adds as much as a small main.
- Use our meal calculator to add up a whole meal before you go.
Chains without calories online
These menus do not show calories next to their prices: Dishoom, Bundobust, MyLahore, Harry Ramsden’s, Poppies Fish & Chips, Rockfish, Franco Manca, Pret A Manger. Some have a separate nutrition guide, so check each brand’s own site.

Frequently asked questions
Which UK restaurant chain has the lowest-calorie meal?
Of the chains we checked, the lightest proper dish is Aunty Geeta’s Prawn Curry at Mowgli Street Food, at 195 kcal.
How many calories should a meal be?
There is no single rule. The NHS guide is about 2,000 kcal a day for women and 2,500 kcal for men. A main meal of 600 to 800 kcal leaves room for the rest of the day.
What does “proper dish” mean here?
A food item priced at or above that chain’s typical food price. It stops very small items like a side salad or a dip being counted as a meal.
How we worked this out: every figure comes from the official menus we checked on 23 October 2026. We used one named branch or official menu per chain, and each menu page says which. Most UK chains set prices branch by branch. So your local prices may differ. Only food items with a single published calorie figure are counted; drinks, sauces and add-ons are left out. This guide is not medical or dietary advice.
